Leylah Fernandez – Statement
Fernandez: I would like to learn some Serbian words
Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez will go into the next round of Serbia Ladies Open.
She beat Slovenia’s Polona Herzog in straight sets – 7:5, 6:1.
“It was very important for me to play good, because I haven’t been playing my best game in the past few tournaments. Last year, we had a difficult match. I did not watch it again, as I tried to focus on this one. Yesterday, we practiced together, before we knew we would play again, it just so happens. We respect each other very much. Now, I’m just focused on the next match,” the Canadian said.
The match against Polona Herzog was suspended because of rain, and Fernandez said that during situations such as these, she spends time in the gym, talking with her family or listening to music.
In the next round, she will play the winner of the match between Viktoriya Tomova (BUL) and Lola Radivojević (SRB).
“They are both good players. I know it will be a good match, but I will focus on my game, and we will see what happens.”
In the end, she praised the WTA tournament in Belgrade.
“The tournament is really amazing, they did a great job with the organization. We have excellent capacities to train in the gym, the food is great, and everything is close by. I am in Serbia for the second time, I have not learned any word in Serbian yet. I hope to change that.”
