Stojanović and Krunić win Serbia Ladies Open

Serbian tennis had a major success this weekend, after Nina Stojanović and Aleksandra Krunić won the trophy in Belgrade, in the doubles category.

The Serbian players defeated the Belgian pair, Greet Minnen / Alison Van Uytvanck, after two sets – 6:0, 6:2.

“I am proud that our names will be remembered as the first winners of this tournament. Alex and I have been talking about playing together since the beginning, and I accepted her invitation with pleasure. We have never played together before, but I had faith in us as soon as we stepped on the court. I am proud, I believed we would win the tournament,” said Nina Stojanović.

“I felt that the two of us could be the ones raising the trophy, because we were playing at home. It’s a great honour to win a tournament in Serbia. To be on home ground and win a WTA tournament is truly great,” added Krunić.

It is interesting that the two of them played against each other at the Australia Open.

“That’s normal in tennis. The match in Australia will probably not be the only one. I’m not thinking about Alex being my opponent, it doesn’t matter who’s on the other side. The most important thing is to have fair play after the match, to respect each other, and that’s important. Tournaments go on and that’s a normal thing. It’s great to play with her, we are both full of positive energy. We feel each other, and that’s crucial in doubles,” says Nina.

“The fact that Nina was by my side at the court makes the victory sweeter. We feel one another, our energies match. When one is in crisis, the other is there to help her,” Aleksandra said.

Đorđe Đoković, director of the tournament, expressed his satisfaction about Serbian players winning the trophy.

“It is a great honour that we have our two champions, winners of the first WTA tournament in our country. I would like to thank the sponsors for their support in organizing the tournament, with a wish to have it grow into a higher category tournament, and to increase the number of them in the coming period.”
